On this episode of the Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomes Ryan Hall, the acting director of the Shenandoah Community Capital Fund, and his guests Gabrielle Cash, a capital access navigator, along with Alex White, an AmeriCorps fellow.
Janet introduces the guests and kicks off the discussion by asking Ryan about the Shenandoah Community Capital Fund (SCCF) and its efforts in supporting entrepreneurs through educational programming, access to capital, and networking. The discussion begins with a review of the Entrepreneurship Summit which was facilitated by local entrepreneurs sharing valuable insights and techniques.
Gabrielle discusses her role within SCCF, focusing on the Capital Access Navigator project. This project aims to address inequity and enhance capital access primarily for African American entrepreneurs in the Valley by understanding their challenges and identifying sustainable solutions. She shares the importance of comprehending both financial and non-financial factors affecting these entrepreneurs.
The conversation shifts to discuss the disparities faced by African American entrepreneurs, such as accessing resources, technical assistance, and overcoming systemic barriers. Gabrielle emphasizes the importance of understanding these challenges through listening tours and research to develop effective support systems. Janet underscores the necessity of providing more than just financial support to businesses, highlighting the importance of access to networking, knowledge, and other resources. Gabrielle agrees, noting the structural barriers and the need for supportive policies.
Alex White then joins the conversation, bringing his experience in tech and the broader tech ecosystem. He talks about the importance of integrating technology in business operations and how tech can help small businesses scale. Alex outlines the necessity of addressing the information gaps and creating networks among tech and non-tech businesses alike.
They discuss the unique tech ecosystem within the Shenandoah Valley and the need to connect disparate tech entities to foster a collaborative environment. Alex shares examples of how local businesses could benefit from technological support and research partnerships with educational institutions. They discuss the crucial role of local educational institutions in supporting the tech ecosystem and how they can assist businesses in applying technology effectively. Janet and Alex stress the potential benefits of involving students in real-world business challenges.
Both Gabrielle and Alex express the importance of community involvement and encourage local businesses and entrepreneurs to reach out and share their experiences. This collaborative effort aims to build a stronger support network that benefits the entire Shenandoah Valley.
